A mushaf that knows who else is reading it

Family Quran is a free Quran app built around one idea — that the hardest part of reading daily is doing it alone.

Why we built it

There is no shortage of Quran apps, and most of them do the reading part well. What almost none of them do is the part that actually decides whether somebody reads: the people around them.

A household where everyone has a daily portion, and can see whether the others have kept theirs, reads more than the same household where everyone means to. A memorisation halaqa where the teacher can set each student a goal and hear them recite gets further than one that meets on a Thursday and hopes. That is not a technology insight; it is how people have always learned the Quran. The app just makes it possible when the household is in four cities and the halaqa has two hundred students.

So the circle is not a feature bolted onto a reader. It is the reason the reader exists — and everything else in the app is there because it removes a reason not to open it.

What we hold to

Free, and staying free

No advertising, no subscription, nothing held back behind a price. A mushaf is not a thing to charge admission to, and a feature that would help somebody memorise is not a thing to put behind a paywall.

Your recitation is yours

Speech recognition runs on your device with a model the app carries. No audio is recorded, kept or transmitted. We do not want a copy of your voice reciting the Quran, and we have built it so that we could not have one.

The mushaf as it is printed

604 pages, each in its own Madani typeface, line for line with the printed copy. Somebody who memorised by the shape of a page should find the page where they left it.

It has to work without a signal

The mushaf, the azkar, the tasbih, the prayer times and anything you downloaded are all on the device. A connection is only needed for the parts that reach other people, and we say which those are.

Not only the obvious languages

Nine interface languages, Amharic and Malay among them. Large Muslim populations are poorly served by apps that stop at three, and adding a language is a translation file rather than a rewrite.

Built for two hundred, not for six

A family is the small case. A halaqa at a masjid or a class at a school is the large one, and we sized the circles, the chat and the goals for the large one so the small one is never cramped.

Who it is for

A household

Parents and children with a portion each, wherever they happen to live.

A memorisation halaqa

A teacher, up to two hundred students, a goal each and a place to correct them.

Somebody reading alone

Everything works without a circle. The mushaf, the hifz and the khatm plan are yours either way.

9 languages

The whole app, in every one of them

Arabic · English · German · Amharic · Malay · Portuguese · Turkish · Russian · Japanese
